Things to do in Edmonton in May

by Lauren Irving
April 29th, 2015

We’ve seen you folks in your shorts and flip flops embracing the sunshine and we want to see more where that came from! It’s time to celebrate the warm weather so grab your calendar and mark off these upcoming events.

International Children’s Festival

Bring the family to the Tim Horton’s International Children’s Festival for five days filled with music, theatre, circus and puppetry. Let your inner child shine as you join youngsters in learning about culture through the performing, literary and visual arts. It’s a time to be silly and have fun, so make sure to enjoy face painting, airbrush tattooing, chalk art, musical performances, magicians and more.
May 26 – May 30

Global Visions Film Festival

Lights, camera, action! Global Visions is Western Canada’s premier documentary festival and perfect for all you movie buffs out there. If you’re a Nirvana fan, then you’ll love the opening night film “Cobain: Montage of Heck” which looks into the life of Kurt Cobain through personal diaries, recordings and videos. Choose from 45 documentaries from around the world representing 24 different countries. There are even 3 Academy Award Nominees in the lineup!
May 7 – May 18

Seasonal Specials

It’s an exciting month because some of our favourite attractions are waking up from hibernation! Fort Edmonton Park opens on May 16 where you can explore Edmonton’s past at Canada’s largest living history museum. Enjoy spectacular views and take a ride on the High Level Bridge Streetcar which is up and running on May 15. And the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is open for business on May long weekend with some brand new buildings for you to explore!

NUOVA Opera & Music Theatre Festival
Formally known as the Vocal Arts Festival, the NUOVA festival is celebrating their 12th anniversary with a new name, new venues and new partners. You’ll enjoy watching Canada’s emerging artists in action whether at the showcase concerts, vocal gems concerts, opera scenes and excerpts, or the main stage productions. This is the largest festival of its kind in Canada, so make sure you don’t miss it!
May 22 – July 4

Dinosaurs Unearthed: The Exhibition

Did we scare you? We’ll take that as a no, but the new TELUS World of Science exhibition may surprise you! Dinosaurs Unearthed: The Exhibition is coming to town on May 15 with 17 life-size animatronic dinosaurs that roar and move. Try your hand at dusting for fossils, marvel at real fossils and learn about newly discovered dinosaurs of the feathered variety. It’s time to bring out your inner paleontologist!
May 15 – October 12

Spring Fairs and Sales

It’s time to get your creative juices flowing because May brings an assortment of arts and crafts fairs! Your first stop is the Butterdome Spring Craft Sale which comes to town May 1 – 3 and has a huge variety of handmade fashion, jewellery, home décor and more! Next, you can swing by the Royal Bison Art and Craft Fair from May 8 – 10, which offers local and unique independent arts, crafts and design. Finally, visit the Muttart for their annual Bedding Plant Sale on May 21 – 23, to get a kick start on the gardening season.

Patios and Picnics

When the air is warm we all know that meals are better enjoyed outdoors in the sunshine with a cold beverage. We’ve come up with a list of the best patios in the city, so take a trip down patio lane and pick your favourites with Patio Dreamin’ part 1 and part 2. You may be thinking to yourself “why sit on a patio when you can pack your own perfectly delicious meal?” Well don’t worry we’ve thought of that too, check out Edmonton’s Best Picnic Spots. Bon appetit!

TELUS World of Science IMAX films

Sit back, relax, put on those 3D glasses and head out on a journey at the IMAX theatre. Swim with sharks and sea turtles and then explore the lush tropical islands of West Papua when you watch Journey to the South Pacific. Enjoy the Island of Lemurs: Madagascar where you will head to Madagascar and learn about the unique lives of the lemurs. Or journey alongside the panda Tau-Tau as he is released in the bamboo forest of China with Pandas: The Journey Home.

St. Albert Kinsmen Rainmaker Rodeo & Exhibition

Yee-haw! Pull on your boots and get ready for a good time at the 50th anniversary of the St. Albert Rainmaker Rodeo and Exhibition. There’s lots going on to keep you entertained whether it be cheering on cowboys and cowgirls, spending time playing games at the midway or exploring the marketplace. And the concert stage has two different lineups, one featuring country and the other featuring rock.
May 22- May 24

Art on the Block

We know what you’re singing, “I’m still, I’m still Jenny from the Block”, but you’ve got it wrong! Art on the Block is an event held at the Art Gallery of Alberta where you can sip on cocktails and battle it out for over 100 auction items made by Canadian artists. And if you’ve got J-LO on the mind, might as well join the dance party when you win your favourite piece.
