Thursday, September 30, 2010 - Migrants Reverse Course

One of the best measures of the relative economic and social health of a region is whether migrants are moving to or from the region. According to Statistics Canada data released this morning, Alberta just experienced its most solid quarter of interprovincial migration in a year. 2,820 Canadians moved to Alberta from other provinces during the second quarter of 2010, up from only 312 in the first quarter and net-negative migration in the two quarters before that (see graph). In addition to the ... Full Article...

Friday, September 24, 2010 - Age and ownership

That sunny vacation condo may tempt you, but is it in your retirement fund? Even in the beleaguered American housing market, there is one segment of the population in which homeownership rates continue to rise, and that's the over 65s. According to numbers released by the U.S. Census Bureau last week, homeownership among seniors is holding up, whereas rates are down among all other age groups, compared with five years ago. For seniors in Canada looking to buy property, whether it is a principal ... Full Article...

Friday, September 24, 2010 - Mortgage terms explained for regular folks

Now that real-estate prices in this part of the world have fallen to the point where a family of modest means can buy a modest home in the suburbs for a modest $1.5 million, those of you who haven't yet known the bliss of home ownership may be thinking, "now's the time." Many industry professionals will tell you that's true. The trouble is, those same professionals will also tell you a lot of other things, and they'll do it using a lot of scary-sounding words like "fiduciary." That's why you ... Full Article...

Friday, September 24, 2010 - Paajarvi gets a hat trick in Oilers victory

EDMONTON ? It wasn't that Magnus Paajarvi didn't know of the tradition. He'd seen enough National Hockey League games on television, back in Sweden, to know that game-goers do throw hats on the ice when a player scores a hat trick. Still . . . "That was cool," said the Edmonton Oilers young gun after he had notched a hat trick and added an assist for good measure in a 5-2 National Hockey League pre-season victory over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday at Rexall Place. "I never had ... Full Article...

Industry has seen 'record-breaking hiring momentum' When Darren Bondar finished his MBA degree from the University of Alberta, he was looking for a job and realized he could create one for himself -- in retail. "I saw an available niche and thought it could work and gave it a shot," says Bondar, founder and president of Edmonton-based watch and sunglasses retailer Watch It! "You get lots of people with bachelor's degrees, business degrees . . . and you can melt that into your own retail ...

Friday, September 24, 2010 - Resilient construction sector boosts demand for trades

Thanks to a better-than-expected recovery in the construction sector, federal stimulus spending and a recent surge in the housing market, forecasters say demand for workers in the skilled trades is strengthening in step with the post-recession economy. ?I characterize it as a soft landing,? says George Gritziotis, executive director of the Construction Sector Council of Canada (CSC), who also cites the government?s Home Renovation Tax Credit as a ?potent measure? that provided a boost through ... Friday, September 24, 2010 - Only two more rate hikes before Bank of Canada stands pat:

Central bank will have to wait until U.S. economy gets up and running The Bank of Canada likely only has two more solo rate hikes before it will have to wait for the U.S. Federal Reserve Board, says National Bank Financial. In a research note published Monday, NBF notes that the Bank of Canada has just raised its key rate a third time while the central banks of most of the other advanced countries look on from the sidelines. ?Given the magnitude of the shock suffered south of the border, ...

Thursday, September 16, 2010 - Think green when shopping for a home

Purchasing a home involves making many decisions. How many bedrooms do you need? What neighbourhood do you want to live in? Should it be previously owned, brand new or custom-built?  Here's one more thing to consider: is the home a "green" home? That is, does it have features that will save energy and water, reduce maintenance costs and waste, offer a healthy indoor environment and have a reduced impact on the earth? With growing awareness around being green and making the right choices for the ... Full Article...

Thursday, September 16, 2010 - Developers Temper Activity

New home construction is one sector of the Alberta economy that bucked the general economic slowdown over the last few months. However, according to data released this morning by The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, housing starts started to show signs of cooling in August. Contractors and builders started construction on 20,900 new homes in August 2010 (seasonally adjusted, annualized rate), a sharp decline from 26,200 units in July. The pace of home construction in August was the ...

Thursday, September 16, 2010 - Alberta Jobs Market Moves Mostly Sideways

After a summer of fairly robust job creation in Alberta, employment growth slipped slightly into negative territory in August - the first month of overall job loss since March. The total number of jobs in Alberta fell by 4,700 and the unemployment rate notched upwards to 6.5% in August. Although total employment growth was negative, the drop was entirely due to a loss of 15,600 part-time jobs, which more than offset a gain of 10,900 full-time jobs. The overall figures were slightly more ...
